September 2006
Hey All
Well I am well and truly in the flat now – that’s right first loads of washing and hoovering are accomplished. I am as usual hardly ever home and once again bitching about the crapitude that is University administration. So all whinges out the way down to the good stuff.
University – well a more negative bunch of people I will be surprised to meet – you’d think working in mental health would have been depressing but it wasn’t there was a comradeship which I loved. No one seems to have a good word to say about teaching including the teachers I am beginning to wonder why I am bothering.
I have been given my first school placement and will be in sunny sunny Balham, just down the road from where Laura used to live and a bus or train away from dear Clapham. It’s not a great school but in a way a challenge doesn’t bother me – a baptism of fire might not be a bad thing for me at least this term I get heavy supervision and tutor time.
Important stuff next: Well it has been a fab month for film and theatre, Life of Galileo at the NT, In Extremis at the Globe, 39 Steps at the Criterion, Tom and Viv at the Almeida, Wicked at the Apollo, Moon for the Misbegotten at the Old Vic and Monday will be The Alchemist.
I loved Wicked but then I loved it when I was in Chicago last year its everything a musical should be all about the heart not about the head too much. I see enough plays which are heavy and intellectual but don’t engage my emotions. Idina Menzel was brilliant as Elphaba she has the most amazing voice and an ability to make you care which I think is quite rare.
I also really enjoyed Moon for the Misbegotten with Kevin Spacey, Eve Best and Colin Meany. Meany in particular was brilliant as the drunk, not quite as stupid and cruel as he appears, Irish immigrant father. This is my second Eugene O’Neil play and while you can guarantee his plays never have a happy ending they are incredibly powerful and boy do they stir you up.
I also saw a premier of the History Boys – my review will be up soon on the site www.musicomh.com let me just say the Soho Hotel is very swanky!!
Well October looks to be as mad busy as September but once I get rid of this dreadful cold I have no doubt I will enjoy every minute.
